GENETICS & IVF INSTITUTE'S PGD LABORATORY

Meet Our Laboratory and Clinical Staff. Click Here >

The PGD Laboratory at Genetics & IVF Institute began work in 1992 and performed its first clinical cycle in March 1993. Since then, the PGD laboratory staff has performed more than 1000 PGD cycles for hundreds of patients at our clinic in suburban Washington, DC, and more recently for assisted reproductive technology (ART) centers around the US . The Genetics & IVF Institute PGD Laboratory has published more than 20 peer reviewed articles detailing our PGD work. Our laboratory was the first laboratory in the world to perform and achieve a pregnancy for an autosomal dominant disease (Marfan syndrome) and the first lab to achieve a pregnancy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

We continue to develop novel testing methodologies and actively participate in both the ESHRE (European Society for Human Reproduction & Embryology) PGD Consortium and the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis International Society. Our laboratory director is on the Steering Committee for the ESHRE PGD Consortium and helped author the recent guidelines for good practice in PGD.

MICROSORT® for GENDER SELECTION

MicroSort is a new scientific method, currently in an FDA approved clinical trial, which increases the chance of a couple having a child of a particular gender. MicroSort is used before conception to separate sperm into those that either primarily produce girls or those that primarily produce boys. Sperm that has gone through the MicroSort process can then be used in an artificial insemination or to inseminate the eggs retrieved from an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be used to inject sorted sperm directy into the eggs obtained from IVF. MicroSort can be combined with PGD and is especially useful if patients want to avoid a gender-linked genetic disease. By using MicroSort, more embryos of the desired gender can be created, which can then be tested using PGD. Learn more>
