Rapid Results

Following biopsy on day 3 of embryo growth, individual blastomeres are removed and spread on slides in preparation for FISH testing at our state-of-the-art facility in Fairfax, VA. Results for all testing are available approximately 24 hours from receipt in the laboratory.

Experience
The GIVF's PGD lab has been performing single cell analysis on blastomeres from day-3 embryos for over 12 years (first clinical case March 1993). Since then, hundreds of patients have undergone over 1000 PGD cycles and have benefited from our experience and dedication. We have pioneered many of the current technologies being used in PGD labs today, and were the first lab in the world to perform PGD for an autosomal dominant disease (Marfan syndrome), and the first lab in the world to achieve a pregnancy following PGD for spinal muscular atrophy Type I (SMA-I).

Biopsy Services Available
FISH analysis is available for aneuploidy screening (8 probe panel), gender selection with or without aneuploidy screening (X, Y, 21 or full aneuploidy panel), and most reciprocal and Robertsonian chromosome translocations and other chromosomal anomalies.

PCR-based tests for single gene defects will be accepted in early 2005. PCR analysis will be available for cystic fibrosis (any mutation or combination of mutations), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Huntington's disease (non-disclosing PGD testing), and sickle cell disease by microchip analysis.

Free Training
Training is available at our state-of-the-art laboratory facility in Suburban Washington, DC. This training includes both biopsy and cell spreading training with hands-on experience in both steps prior to returning to your lab. Once trained, we encourage our collaborators to practice the skills learned during training and send practice samples to our lab prior to your first clinical case. This final step allows collaborators to become very comfortable with the procedure prior to working with patient samples.

Open 7 days/week, 365 days/year
The PGD lab at GIVF is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We are available to receive your specimens on weekends and all holidays. Turn-around time is always approximately 24 hours from receipt of samples.

Board-Certified Genetic Support
The PGD lab at GIVF is supported by a board-certified geneticist, Harvey Stern, MD, PhD, and a great team of board-certified genetic counselors. On a three-month rotating basis, one genetic counselor works with our PGD program to counsel ART patients and physicians in the finer points of this very intricate process. Collaborating centers can set-up a one-hour counseling session with our PGD genetic counselor to go over, in detail, the process and the pros and cons of testing.
